After all, what is the role of an Affiliate? It's to gain sales by endorsing a product.

Would Nike have sold as many sneakers without Mike? Or, would The Publishers Clearing House have sold all those magazines without Ed? Not a chance.

Why are companies willing to pay their endorsers such big bucks? Simple. They know all too well that "trust and credibility" sells like hotcakes.

***** Write a Free E-book that's going to help me. It can be in your own words or a compilation of the work of others. Help me to learn and you'll gain my respect ... and my ear.

***** Let me see your articles in respected newsletters and references from relevant web sites. The more I see your name, the more credibility I'll associate with you. I'll sign-up for your newsletter to learn what else you have to say.

***** Show me that you've used the products you're suggesting. How, exactly did you benefit? What were the results? Is there any downside at all? (You see? Now you've got me paying attention and asking for more information).

Get the idea? Affiliate sales are all about building relationships, not promoting products. You can promote until you're green in the face, but if you haven't developed a personal relationship with your prospects, and earned their respect and trust, it's unlikely you'll ever get more than a handful of sales.

And please remember this, Affiliate success does not come overnight. Like anything worthwhile, it takes effort and commitment.

The topic of viral marketing is not new in Internet marketing circles. Put your affiliate links within the report somewhere, and as the visitors start to snowball you’ll get some of them visiting your affiliate product pages and buying.

3. Create a product review. By reviewing the very product you’re trying to sell - and especially reviewing it really well - you can stir up a lot of traffic and links from other places around the web where people are talking about the product or others like it. When people come to read your review, if they like what they see, they’re very likely to click your affiliate links and buy the items.

1. Pay Per Sale (PPS) - This is the most common type of affiliate program. When promoting programs, products or services on a pay per sale basis, the affiliate only earns money when a sale is made through their affiliate link. Usually the money earned is a percentage of the total sale, and this is called the affiliate commission.

If you're new to affiliate marketing online, you may not have much money to spare for marketing and advertising efforts. Thankfully there are some great alternatives that cost little to nothing, other than your time. One of the best known is Article Marketing.

Article Marketing is the process of writing quality articles which are then given out free to various places around the web. These articles have your name and information on them, along with a link or two to your website. Your website should then have some kind of information available about the affiliate program or product you're promoting.

When you give away your articles at no cost, more people will read them around the web. And each person that reads the article could potentially click your website links and visit your site. If you've done a great job of introducing your affiliate product on your website, they may then click the affiliate link and make a purchase. This of course earns you money.

Not all affiliate marketers promote a product on their website though. Instead, they use article marketing to get visitors to an email sign up page. When the visitors sign up for the information you're offering, they'll start getting regular email messages from you. And your email messages are the ones that will promote the affiliate products for you instead. This allows you, as an affiliate marketer, to build your own targeted prospect list around certain topics. 1. Find a great topic. Sometimes this is called finding a niche, but the point is the same: Figure out what people are really interested in - or even desperate for - on any given topic. If they're really itching for information about something, they're more likely to buy without thinking twice about it.

2. Find a great affiliate product. The affiliate product you choose of course should be related to the topic you found in the previous step. Your articles don't have to be long essays either. Most good web based articles range in size from 300-500 words, but you can make it as long as 1000 words if you have that much to say. 4. Distribute your articles. This is the easy part. Once you've finished writing, be sure to create a signature style area at the end of your article which has your name, copyright, a bit of information about you or your website, and a link. Then simply submit the articles to various directories and distribution sites around the web.

Many affiliate marketers have already come across the term "social networking" in the last year or so, but not all of them know what this means. And most affiliates have no idea how to use social networking websites to promote their affiliate products.

As long as you play by the specific rules for the sites you're using, and you do your promotions consistently and well.

On forums and discussion boards for instance, you can't usually just go in and post an advertisement. Instead, you need to join the discussions which are already in progress. Try your best to provide helpful and useful content to other members of the board, and be sure to post as often as possible too. In each post, you should have a forum signature which contains a small ad for what you're offering. Link that signature to your website, blog or affiliate sales page. Then the more you post, the more that signature will be seen. And the more helpful and useful your posts are, the more other members will be inclined to click your links.

If you use a social networking site which allows you to create and share your website bookmark links, then you'll want to link to your website, blog, and affiliate sales pages of course. The answer is – yes and no. It’s not a necessity, but having your own website can be a boon to your online affiliate sales. Technically, you can be an affiliate for someone else’s product and promote your link through article marketing, blogs, forum posts, and other non-site specific methods.

But each time someone follows your link directly to the product owner’s pitch page, you’re allowing them to opt out of a lifetime of future sales through you. You’ll be working longer and harder for each sale because for every new sale, you have to cast your net all over again.

If you have a domain of your own, you can set up a simple opt-in form where people can subscribe to your list and cater to their needs week after week, without having to return to the ‘net each time to find new prospects.

Instead, you build a list of people interested in your niche topics, and then find other products to promote to them. It’s much easier to visit ClickBank for a new product to promote than it is to drum up new customers to buy a single product.

In order to build a list, you need a simple domain (or even a blog will do), with an autoresponder tool you can use to capture the contact information and store the names for you. This is known as a squeeze page, where your primary goal is to get the contact information in hand.

How to Choose Good Affiliate Programs

Once you're ready to start promoting other people's products as an affiliate marketer, your first question might be how to choose a good affiliate program? And the answer usually is: It varies. There are many things to take into consideration in choosing an affiliate program, so we'll look at several of the most important ones here.

1. What market are you promoting to? An affiliate program which sells shoes won't be much good to you if you're selling to people who want to learn how to train their new puppy. So the first step in choosing good affiliate programs is to only choose from those which fit your particular affiliate marketing niche.

2. What are the commissions? Knowing how much commission you'll earn from one affiliate program to another can help you decide which one might be best for you. There are other things to consider besides commission levels of course, but most new affiliate marketers feel this is important. They'd rather earn 50% sales commissions instead of 35%.

3. How much actual cash do you earn? Most new affiliates don't realize this, but sometimes a high paying commission rate is not as good at it might first look when choosing an affiliate program. If you choose to promote a $50 product for 50% commissions for instance, you'll earn $25. If on the other hand, you promote a product which sells for $150... even though you're earning 35% commissions, that ends up being a cool $52.50 for you. Twice as much as that "higher" paying affiliate program.

4. What are the program's terms? It's very important to read the rules, terms of service, and all fine print for any affiliate program before you join. Unfortunately there are some affiliate programs which aren't overly kind to affiliates in their terms of service. If they only allow you to earn sales commissions when someone clicks your link for instance, but not if they come back an hour later, you might want to reconsider joining them.

5. What are the payment terms? Some affiliate programs require you to earn over $100 before they'll send your earnings to you, and others will only pay you once every three months. Many new affiliates can't afford to wait three to four months for a payment, and many also can't earn $100 or more very quickly when they're first starting out. So find out what their payment terms are before joining, and be honest with yourself about whether that payment plan will actually work for you or not.

6. How good is the sales page? This is a very important item that many new affiliate marketers are clueless about. If the sales page will not sell, then you're not likely to make much - if any - money promoting that product. A good rule of thumb is to check out the sales page first, and gauge your own reaction to it. Does it make you want to whip out your credit card and buy? If so, then it's worth at least a trial promotion period.

If the sales page makes you scratch your head, say "hmmm" or "huh?", or you find yourself constantly trying to reread a section to understand it, you may want to pass this one up. If it's not good enough to engage the reader and make them want to buy, it's not likely going to help you make affiliate sales.

You’ve found the perfect product to promote as an affiliate marketer. The sales copy is so good that it left you salivating. The angle is fresh and new. The product appears to be on the cutting edge of the “next big thing”. The price is right, the commission is good, and even the graphics are beautiful. Full speed ahead, right?

Not so fast. You might be able to send traffic to the sales page and start racking up the sales, but there’s a risk in embracing the program at face value. What happens if the actual product stinks?

You already know the answer: Refunds. If the product doesn’t live up to the sales page, it will generate chargebacks and refund requests at a rapid clip. All of those commission earnings you were so excited about will disappear in the black hole of refunds before you see a check.

There’s another risk in blind affiliate marketing and it can be even more devastating than losing out on commissions. You can ruin your reputation. If you throw your weight behind a lousy product, it damages your relationship with your list, makes you a question mark to those who saw just how lousy the product was, and can put you in a pickle for months, if not years, to come.

You don’t want to see earnings evaporate as angry customers yell for returns. You don’t want to see your good name permanently tainted by a drag through the mud, either. That’s why you don’t want to blindly promote any product.

#4 Is the company a member of the Better Business Bureau. The better the reputation they have the better you should feel. I actually know of a program out there right now (which I won't say which one it is to protect the people involved) that people haven't checked out to well because one of the co-founders of the company actually has 42 Better Business Bureau complaints against him resulting from previous scams he had run. This should kill your enthusiasm and you should not be saying things like "maybe he has turned over a new leaf" or "I'll just pretend I didn't know that and carry on in this anyway". It amazes me how people can be duped like this when they ought to just cut their losses and start over.

#5 How extensive is the back office training. Do you have a mentor who is willing to help you and is his success tied to yours. Fire off a few emails to your future mentor and see if he gives a rip or if he is just trying to sell you something and say goodbye. Personally I like this type of affiliate program because it makes everyone accountable.

#6 Watch out for affiliate companies that only take one kind of payment. The more kinds of payment they accept the better. Why? Because if that payment processor should decide they don't like XYZ affiliate company (for whatever reason they may have invented) that whole affiliate company will go down with your investment. Personally I don't like companies that won't pay you by a cheque in the mail just because I have seen this very thing happen a few times.

#7 Your future affiliate program should be a free affiliate program to join but if you do pay something you should also be able to get out after a reasonable amount of time with your money back. Another good thing to look for is a discussion forum where you can login and learn about questions or problems other affiliates are having with the program. This can be very intuitive and give you an inside view before you get too involved.
